| Redneck Zombies is a film released by Troma. The film itself is set in rural Maryland in 1986. The plot of the film is set into motion when a U.S. Army soldier accidentally spills a 50 gallon drum of nuclear waste off the back of his jeep. The drum is found by a stereotypically back-woods family who proceed to empty out the drum in order to use it as part of their new moonshine still. Unfortunately for the rednecks and the consumers of their product, the toxic waste residue left in the drum produces a batch of shine that turns those who consume it into zombies. Meanwhile, a group of young people are camping in the nearby woods. Usual zombie hijinks ensue, with all but one of the camping protagonists winding up as zombie fodder. The film never takes itself too seriously, and although it is quite violent, with gory special effects comparable to Tom Savini's in Dawn of the Dead, humorous moments abound in the film. In a particularly amusing scene, a living human imitates an undead zombie and leads a group of the flesh eaters to the spot where one of his fellow campers is hiding. While the film is considered a "Cult" or "Campy Classic" (sometimes categorised as "So bad, it's good!") and never achieved mainstream success, the films title and poster became infamous, with the title used as an answer to a question in the 1980s edition of "Trivial Pursuit" (the question being "What film has the tagline 'They're Tobacco Chewin', Gut Chompin', Cannibal Kinfolk from Hell!'"). The film also features entertaining and original country & western songs built around redneck and zombie themes. Because it was a large risk for Troma to distribute what is believed to be the first film shot entirely on video to receive this treatment, director and special effects artist Pericles Lewnes agreed to do effects for several Troma productions, notably Troma's War, Sgt.Kabukiman NYPD and The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (in which he appeared).
