RoboCop is a satirical 1987 science fiction action movie, directed by Paul Verhoeven. It has also spawned a comic book, two sequels, a video game, and four television series, all featuring a cyborg police officer. The film was produced by Orion Pictures.

RoboCop is a film about a near dystopian future, set in Detroit, Michigan (sometime between 1995-2005). Violent crime is out of control, and the city is in financial ruin. The city hires the megacorporation OCP (Omni Consumer Products) to operate the police department, in effect privatizing it. OCP is interested in rebuilding "Old Detroit" and replacing it with what they call "Delta City". Before this large construction project can begin, OCP wishes to end crime in the city, and creates RoboCop.

Plot

Alex J. Murphy

RoboCop was once a dedicated Irish-Catholic police officer by the name of Alex J. Murphy (played by Peter Weller). Alex Murphy was married with one son, and was working in a different precinct of Detroit before being transferred, along with a number of officers, to the Old Detroit district, on order from OCP. Old Detroit was the most crime-ridden portion of the city, with a high rate of officer fatalities - many at the hands of Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith), the head of the local mafia.

Richard "Dick" Jones (Ronny Cox) is the vice president of OCP (with secret ties to Boddicker). During an executive board meeting in which plans for OCP's urban renewal of Old Detroit were introduced, Jones presented the Enforcement Droid 209 (ED-209) as a means of 24-hour policing in order to eliminate the crime and prepare the way for the project. However, the demonstration ended with the death of an executive when the robot failed to respond correctly, leading the President of OCP (referred to simply as the Old Man) (Daniel O'Herlihy), to listen to executive Bob Morton's (Miguel Ferrer) proposal - Morton had been developing a similar project whilst waiting for Jones to slip up; a human-machine hybrid - a "Robo-cop". All that was needed, according to Morton, was "some poor schmuck to volunteer".

Alex Murphy and his new partner, Anne Lewis, had been pursuing Clarence Boddicker and his gang after a failed bank robbery, in which the money was accidentally burned. Chasing the villains to an abandoned steel mill and separated from his partner, Murphy shot and killed one of the thugs before being surrounded and tortured, and then murdered. After having his weapon knocked away and collapsing after a blow to his legs, Murphy's right hand was blown off at point-blank range by Boddicker's shotgun.

As Murphy rose up in pain and attempted to get away, a thug named Emil Antonowsky shot Murphy's entire right arm away at the shoulder. Immediately the rest of the gang followed and opened fire on the helpless officer until they ran out of ammunition. Thanks to his body armor, Murphy was not killed instantly but sustained multiple shotgun blasts to his torso. Boddicker ended it with a single shot to Murphy's head. Lewis discovered her fallen partner and called for a medical transport which delivers Murphy's brain dead body for an emergency operation; however, Murphy's heart flatlined on the operating table. At this point, OCP stepped in.

Conversion into Robocop

Murphy was chosen to be the center of a new cyborg. His brain, face, and other organic parts were attached to a life-support system inside a human-shaped titanium body; this cyborg was named RoboCop. His organic right hand had been destroyed before Murphy was killed, which made it necessary to fashion a replacement. While the surgeons were able to save the left arm, Bob Morton (head of the RoboCop Project) insisted on giving him an entirely artificial body. The left arm was then removed.

RoboCop's external-skeleton was made out of titanium, and was coated with kevlar, rendering him essentially bulletproof. His hands and legs were enhanced by hydraulic motors, enabling him to crush a human throat with his grip and break through concrete walls. His hands were capable of exerting 420 foot pounds (570 N·m) of energy, which would be enough to crush every bone in a human hand. Although equipped with computer-fast reflexes and capable of near-human mobility (such as the ability to drive vehicles and navigate stairs), Robocop's ground speed and manueverability was somewhat limited, due to the sheer weight of his titanium body (The third Robocop film would have him given an attachable jetpack enabling him to fly when heightened mobility is called for).
