| Ronald "Ron" Bilius Weasley (born 1 March 1980) is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of books. He is portrayed by Rupert Grint in the films. Ron's best friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. BackgroundRon was born to Arthur Weasley and Molly Prewett Weasley, members of an old and well-known pure-blood Wizarding family. Ron is the sixth of seven children, and is the youngest son. Ron grew up in The Burrow, near the village of Ottery St. Catchpole in Devon. Ron has five older brothers, Bill, Charlie, Percy, twins Fred and George, and a little sister, Ginny. Most of his fellow Gryffindors and other friendly classmates call him "Ron," with the exception of Luna Lovegood, who calls him by his full name, and Lavender Brown, who briefly used the endearment "Won-Won" while they were dating. His brothers, Fred and George jokingly refer to him as "ickle Ronniekins" in the first book. Draco Malfoy and other less-than-friendly students from rival Hogwarts Houses generally call him "Weasley." Dobby the house-elf referred to him once as "Wheezy." At the beginning of the series, Mr. Weasley is head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, a minor division in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Law Enforcement. This is an impressive sounding position, but one which barely earns Mr. Weasley enough to support his large family. Throughout the series, Ron is very self-conscious and frustrated with his family's poorness. Despite their lack of money, Ron has such caring parents and a closeknit family that he is lucky in ways he may not realize. In this respect he supplies a foil to Harry, who is wealthy (in the Wizarding world, at least) but who lives with an uncaring aunt and uncle. Personality and SkillsRon has the trademark flaming red hair of the Weasleys and blue eyes. He is described as being tall, thin and gangly, with freckles, a long nose and big hands and feet.Ron's older brothers have each excelled in various ways; Ron sometimes feels lost in the shadow of their accomplishments and has a great desire to be noticed in his own right. When given the opportunity, Ron basks in the glow of the spotlight. It can be seen that Ron's craving for recognition can cause him to have arguments with Harry and Hermione, when he feels that he is sidestepped by others in front of his best friends. Here, it sometimes seems that not only is Ron overshadowed by his brothers, but also by his friends. Hermione is brilliant and is one of the best students in the school; Harry is an excellent Quidditch player on the House team, extremely famous and extremely wealthy. Ultimately, however, Ron's loyalty and dedication towards his two best friends is unquestionable. As he grows older, Ron begins to reveal his own abilities as he is made a prefect, and also gets chosen as the Quidditch Keeper for Gryffindor (Harry is the team's captain at this time and does the choosing, but his choice is not entirely based on bias as Ron does prove to be a skilled player). This seems to give him credit as the secondary hero in such stories like Sam Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings and Han Solo in Star Wars. Ron is an excellent chess player and usually beats his best friends at Wizard's Chess. He can be an outstanding Keeper, but his skills are sometimes adversely affected due to nervousness and lack of confidence at performing in front of a large crowd. Ron has a sardonic, wisecracking sense of humour and his comments, though usually hilarious, can occasionally offend or insult others. Ron can be very clueless at times about what is going on, especially with girls. At times Ron, affable though he is, can appear to be the most emotional and impulsive of the trio, often going with what his feelings dictate any given moment as opposed to thinking things through. That, in addition to his sometimes apparent insensitivity to the feelings of others, has unfortunately cast him as something of an oaf in the eyes of some. However, Ron is generally very good-natured and dependable.
