Movies - Rosetta

Rosetta is a 1999 Belgium film written and directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Winner of the 1999 Cannes Palme d'Or awards for best picture and best actress, Rosetta (played by Émilie Dequenne
) is about a girl of 17 trying desperately to escape her depressing life. In this effort she tries to find and keep a job that will allow her to move out of the caravan and away from her alcoholic mother. In Belgium the film inspired a new law prohibiting employers from paying teen workers less than the minimum wage.

Quote

Rosetta: “Your name is Rosetta. My name is Rosetta. You found a job. I found a job. You’ve got a friend. I’ve got a friend. You have a normal life. I have a normal life. You won’t fall in a rut. I won’t fall in a rut. Good night. Good night.”
