Plot summary

David Soul stars as Ben Mears, a moderately successful novelist who has returned to his small hometown of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine, to begin work on a new book. He takes as his inspiration the Marsten house, a dilapidated mansion that overlooks the town. Ben reacquaints himself with his old English teacher (Ayres) and starts seeing a beautiful young art instructor (Bedelia). There are also two other new arrivals in town, the suave Mr. Straker (Mason) and his curiously absent business partner, Kurt Barlow, who are opening an antique shop and who happen to be the new owners of the Marsten house.

On the very night that a mysterious crate is picked up and shipped to the Marsten house at the behest of Mr. Straker, a young boy disappears and his brother becomes gravely ill, and a man is found dead in his car. The next morning a dog is found impaled on a gate. And later that night the sick brother dies in the hospital. At first the townspeople dismiss it all as a series of tragic accidents. But something evil has taken hold of Jerusalem's Lot.

Ben and his teacher are confronted with the horrible truth, that vampires have infested the township. As more and more people fall victim Ben determines to confront the demonic entities, and to eradicate them at their source: the Marsten house.

Additional info

  • Larry Cohen wrote a draft of the script that proved unsatisfactory; he would direct A Return to Salem's Lot
    in 1987.
  • A second film of Salem's Lot was released in 2004. See Salem's Lot (2004 film).
