| Colonel Saul Tigh is a character on Battlestar Galactica and is the Executive Officer/XO of Battlestar Galactica, played by Michael Hogan. He is married to Ellen Tigh. Saul Tigh, a former Mark II Viper pilot, has struggled with alcoholism for much of his life, although he has excellent tactical skills and is fiercely loyal. He entered the fleet as an enlisted man during the first Cylon war, and eventually secured a commission as a Colonial officer. According to deleted second season scenes on the official BSG website, he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from particularly bloody shipboard combat with Cylon Centurions (which led to his drinking problem). Some time after the first Cylon war, he was mustered out of the service (so was Adama), and took low status work in civilian freighters for several years before being reinstated to the fleet. He has a strained relationship with his wife, Ellen, whom he initially divorced (after her infidelity was discovered), although after her reappearance on the Galactica they have rebuilt their relationship. Saul's love for Ellen occasionally blinds him to her rather obvious attempts to manipulate him, to further her own quest for power. Ellen's advice often results in disaster for him. He has keen insights on Cylons, believing even during the first Cylon war, that they were motivated by emotions, specifically hatred. He is also frequently able to anticipate Cylon tactics from his considerable combat experience. Tigh is a longtime friend of fellow Colonial officer William Adama. They have served together for many years, first in civilian freighters and later in the military; Adama personally arranged his reinstatement after attaining some influence through his command. Tigh is gruff and sometimes rather unlikable, although he once observed that "if the crew likes the XO, then he isn't doing his job." The character was originally named Paul Tigh but copyright reasons forced a name change to Saul. King Saul from the Old Testament of the Bible, was also a deeply troubled warrior, who took his own life after losing a battle with the Philistines. Similarly, Saul Tigh was about to commit suicide when he was suddenly reinstated to Colonial duty.
