Movies - Seducing Doctor Lewis

Seducing Doctor Lewis (La Grande séduction) is a 2003
comedy film and the first film directed by Jean-François Pouliot. The script was written by Ken Scott. It won the "Audience Award" at 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Starring in the movie is Raymond Bouchard, Dominic Michon-Dagenais, David Boutin and Guy-Daniel Tremblay.

The filming location was the Quebec, Canada island of Harrington Harbour, population 300. The story is about a fishing village that has fallen on hard times and the film's producers found the island to look a little too pretty to fill this role, so they needed to make it look worse than it is, "distressing" it a bit. The residents of the real village are actually primarily English-speaking, most having settled there from Newfoundland.

Plot

St. Marie-La-Mauderne is a tiny harbour village in Quebec, Canada. The vanishing fish stocks have plummeted the once thriving community into financial decline. Therefore, the fishermen have had to rely on government welfare for eight years. One day, when a multinational company wants to build a plastics factory on the island, the locals see an opportunity for the village to be restored to its former prosperity. However, due to insurance regulations the factory cannot be built without the town having a resident doctor.

The situation seems hopeless until a young doctor in Montreal has an unfortunate incident with the police and finds himself on a boat to the faraway village. The villagers take advantage of this situation to devise a scheme to convince Dr. Christopher Lewis (Boutin) to become a resident. In the end, having crossed over the line between persuasion and dishonesty, the villagers realize that they cannot keep up the deception forever.
