The sensation called Munnabhai MBBS : After trying to emulate its Hollywood counterparts for the past many years, Bollywood was in the process of losing its identity. The original flavour of India was missing in most of its films, until Munnabhai cropped up. A typical masala-fare, yet a heart wrenching story the film is a highly modified and Indian adaption of the Hollywood hit, Patch Adams.

The protagonist is a soft-hearted gangster who does not like to see people innocent suffering. He brings joy to their life, and tries curing them through his healing touch - which is to entertain them. This movie marked Sanjay Dutt's return to fame and sparked off the 'Munnabhai' lingo across the country, which was based on the local slang used by scouts in Mumbai. The trend in Bollywood is to remake hit South Indian films. But this was reversed in the case of Munnabhai as the film was made into the 3 out of the 4 Southern languages. Kamal Haasan acted in the tamil version titled "Vasool Raja MBBS". Chiranjeevi played "Shankar Dada MBBS" in telugu, while Upendra starred in the Kannada version - Uppidada MBBS

Shankar Dada MBBS - The success story of Shankar Dada MBBS is a case-study in itself. The film was remade in telugu with Tollywood's monarch Megastar Chiranjeevi and Sonali Bendre in the lead. The ever-dependable Paresh Rawal played the role of a comical villain. Jayanth C. Paranji who directed "Bavagaru Bagunnara" a comedy with Chiranjeevi in the past, directed this film. The result - Shankar Dada grossed over 34 crores in the just Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka alone, much higher than what the original Munnabhai MBBS collected all over India. The trade predicted dooms day for the film's buyers who had acquired the film before release for nearly 20 crores. But, it was them who went laughing all the way to the bank. This showcased the stamina of Telugu films to the nation.
