Bio

In the novel Battle Royale, and movie and manga based off of the book, Boy #19 Shinji Mimura, or "The Third Man", is one of the students sent to the island, and attempts to hatch a plan to escape from the Battle Royale program and the island it is held on. His supplied weapon is a Beretta M92F Pistol.

He is a sporty person and a good friend of Shuya, the manga suggestes he is a playboy. His uncle was a computer know it all who taught him a lot about computers and other things. He also gave Shinji the detinator for his bomb.

The Plan

Shinji's basic plan is to use his laptop to hack the government systems and disable the collars on the students' necks. This however (in both the novel and manga) fails due to the microphones built inside all the students explosive collars, informing the overseers of the game of his plan. Afterwards, being careful to communicate via typing on his laptop or writing down instructions, he creates a bomb from materials found on the island, and plans to destroy the school containing the event organisers. In the book and manga To do this he wants to float a rope above the school and run the bomb along the rope using a pully and when the bomb arrives over the school building he will cut the rope and it will hit the roof and blow it up. In the film he attaches the bomb to a Honda Acty truck and plans to drive it to the school where the program admistrator and sevral soldiers are staying and detonate the bomb, then swim to a nearby island and steal a car. He is assisted by Boy #12 Yutaka Seto. In the movie, he is also assisted by Boy #2 Keita Iijima.

Fate

The fate of Shinji's plan varies slightly from the novel and manga to the movie, but they all end with his death.

In the novel and manga, Shinji is attacked by fellow student Kazuo Kiriyama, and is mortally wounded. In a last effort, he activates the bomb in an attempt to kill Kiriyama. Lying on the ground dying, he is eventually killed by a very much unscathed Kiriyama.

In the manga, Shinji and his companion since the competition began, Yutaka, (Boy #12) have an argument after Shinji accidentally shoots Iijima (Boy #2). Kiriyama then walks in and kills Yutaka and wounds Shinji with his Mac-10. Guts falling out of his wounded stomach, Shinji tapes himself up with duct tape and detonates his exposive device. Unfortunately, Kiriyama survives without much ado, and kills Shinji with more gunfire.

In the movie, Shinji is killed in the resulting explosion, which blinds Kiriyama, who is dispatched shortly after by Shogo Kawada.
