| Shrek 2 is the 2004 sequel to the computer-animated 2001 DreamWorks Pictures movie Shrek that was released in the United States on May 19, 2004. In April 2004, the film was selected for competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. There are more Shrek movies to follow, as according to Jeffrey Katzenberg, "We didn't have the guts to tell anybody when we started out, we have two more chapters to tell. Not unlike Peter Jackson did with The Lord of the Rings. The difference is they did have the guts to make all three of them 'back-to-back-to-back.'" Shrek 2 is also the one of the first 3 feature length movies to get the Game Boy Advance Video treatment. Shrek 2 scored the second-largest three-day opening in US history, as well as the largest opening for an animated movie ever, and as of 2004, is the 3rd highest box office grossing film of all time in the United States. Worldwide, it is the 6th highest grossing film. It went on to be one of the most successful films in 2004. The associated soundtrack reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200. PlotThe story begins, when the narrator talks about a beautiful princess who was cursed. A fairy godmother suggested to her parents to keep her a tower until her one true love arrives to lift the curse. At that time, a dashing knight speeds towards a castle in a volcano. He braves his many dangers and takes off his helm to show his charming face. When he reaches Fiona's bedroom, he pushes the curtains aside and find the crossdressing Big Bad Wolf resting. Charming asks where Fiona was. The wolf says she is on her honeymoon. After Shrek and Princess Fiona return from their honeymoon, they receive an invitation from her parents to visit them so they should give their blessing and celebrate their marriage. Princess Fiona has not told her parents, King Harold and Queen Lilian, that she has married an ogre and has become one herself. So bringing their friend Donkey along (who needs a little time away from Dragon), the couple go to the kingdom of Far Far Away to meet the king and queen while their fairy tale friends (the Three Little Pigs, the Three Blind Mice, the Big Bad Wolf, Pinocchio and the Gingerbreadman) watch over the swamp. When the Fairy Godmother discovers that Fiona is married to Shrek, she angrily reminds King Harold of a deal they had made for Princess Fiona to marry her vain son Prince Charming. Prompted by her urgings, and his discomfort at having an ogre as a son-in-law, the King hires the deceptively adorable hitman Puss in Boots to kill Shrek. Shrek with Donkey and Puss in Boots (who, after all takes a liking to Shrek) go to the Fairy Godmother's factory because Fiona isn't feeling happy. But ogres don't live happily ever after. So the gang sneaks into the potions looking for "handsome" but grab "happily ever after" and end up turn the factory's workers into doves while escaping. The Fairy Godmother discovers the thief and decides to use it to her advantage. The "Happily ever after" potion can also work on your true love. But before Shrek can try, Donkey takes a small of the potion. Once the rest is gone, the trio take shelter from a storm in a barn. While they sleep, a mysterious blue light shines in the barn as well as a golden one in Fiona's room. By morning, Shrek is surrounded by three girls and finds out he is now a human man and Donkey had turned into a white stallion. Puss also reads the unseen warning labels facing inside of the potion. It could cause terrible side-effects during transformation and Shrek must kiss his one true love by midnight in order to make the effects permanent. Unfortunately, Shrek's ogre clothes don't fit him so he robs a stagecoach. When returning to the castle that morning, Fiona wakes up finding herself turned back to her human body. When Shrek shouts Fiona, they both try to find each other in the castle. When going into Fiona's room, Shrek sees a cloak. But looking down, he doesn't see any feet. Behind the cloak is the Fairy Godmother. Shrek tries to escape but is trapped. Meanwhile, Fiona meets Charming for the first time. He tells her that he's Shrek and not only is his pysical appearance changed, but also his voice. Shrek watches hopelessly when Fiona thinks Charming is Shrek. The Godmother convinces Shrek that if he loves Fiona, he should let her go. Back at the Poison Apple, Donkey tries to convince Shrek that he has to go back to Fiona because he still loves her. A few moments later, Shrek overhears Harold's voice. He, Donkey and Puss goes outside of the window to eavesdrop. They soon learn that Fairy Godmother and Charming tricked Fiona into thinking that Charming is Shrek and Harold must give a potion to Fiona. If Fiona takes this potion and kisses Charming, she will fall in love with him. Harold also shows signs of beginning to realise that what he is doing is wrong but the Fairy Godmother is threatening to take away his own "happily ever after". When the three friends learn that Charming is Godmother's son, Donkey (being himself) breaks their cover. The trio run for their lives. At the Ball, many famous fairy tale characters, like Hansel and Gretel and Sleeping Beauty, show up.
