Movies - SkekEkt

In the film The Dark Crystal
, the planet of Thra
is ruled by a corrupt race known as the Skeksis
. Their honest and wise alter egos in a faraway valley are the noble urRu. SkekEkt is court Ornamentalist at the Skeksi castle, and his counterpart in the urRu valley is urUtt the Weaver.

Pre-production notes for skekEkt refer to him as an artist and interior designer. He is personified as decadent, hedonistic, perverted, theatrical and vain. Sound notes associated with him are the swishing and rustle of silk. Puppet designer Jim Henson
says of skekEkt, "We've never known whether these Skeksis were male or female. We always kind of liked the idea of them being some uncomfortable mixture in between, but the Designer is certainly the most feminine or effeminate." This limits his leadership ability amongst the Skeksis, who value blatant power, but the obvious Skeksi love of luxury helps maintain skekEkt's position at court. The website habidabad.com notes that a hundred birds die to produce a single cloak for skekEkt.

SkekEkt's appearance is planned in film notes to be "heavily made up with jewels and equipment of mascara". The book The World of the Dark Crystal notes that it was skekEkt who devised a way for the rotting Skeksis to affect a youthful appearance through anointing their skin with a paste of clotted blood and diamond powder. Pre-production notes mention that skekEkt may be attended by slaves who carry his makeup pots and powder puffs. SkekEkt is amongst the more amusing of the Skeksis for his shrieking shows of delicacy in the vulgar milieu of the Skeksi court.
