Movies - SkekShod

In the film The Dark Crystal
, skekShod is court Treasurer for the ruling race of Skeksis
. The Skeksis are a cruel, dragonlike race which represent the base halves of the former ruling UrSkeks
. Each Skeksi has an alter ego amongst the kind urRu, who live in a remote valley far from the Skeksi castle. SkekShod's alter ego is the urRu urYod, the numerologist.

Pre-production notes for the Treasurer note several design influences:
  • A codpiece purse
  • Coin purses
  • Combination locks with dials and keys
  • A jeweler's loop to look at mint marks
  • Measures and weights
  • A pocket calculator
A collar shaped like an abacus is suggested, as are pockets sagging from weight. It is even suggested that the pupils of his eyes may be pound signs. Movement ideas include biting coins to test for gold, reacting to the sound of coins, and stroking a casket under his arm. The website habidabad.com notes that the Treasurer is constantly wringing his hands. The easiest visual cue for picking out the Treasurer in the film is the kerchief covering his head.

The book The World of The Dark Crystal
tells us that skekShod's powers of speech are severely limited, and that he has trouble communicating other than through bribes. Within the Skeksi castle, skekShod is administratively subordinate to the Chamberlain skekSil, but his loyalty lies with a fellow intellectual, skekZok.
