| The Sony HDR-HC1, introduced in mid 2005 (MSRP 1999$ US) , was the first HDV CMOS camcorder which supports 1080i. the CMOS sensor is really 1920x1440 but the camera only captures video at 1440x1080 interlaced. This is because the camera uses the extra resolution of the sensor for optical image stabilization, without losing picture resolution. The HDR-HC1 can also take 1920x1440 digital still pictures. The Sony HDR-HC1 supports 16:9 which allows filmmakers who shoot on video to increase the resolution of their footage up to three times (compared to SD). The widescreen format also translates better to film than the standard SD ration of 4:3.
