Mohanlal dons the role of real life rowdy Thomas Chacko aka Aadu Thoma in Sphadikam which is considered to be one of his best films. Sphadikam marks the emergence of a new Mohanlal, the omnipotent, moustache twirling, tough, anti-hero with a heart of gold.

Thomas Chacko is the son of Chacko master (Thilakan) who believes that a world without mathematics is a big zero. So he regularly punished his son so that he learned it well. He has mixed feelings of fondness and hatred for his son and his behaviour. He fails to recognize the talents of Thomas in designing machines. Unable to stand the punishments of his father,he runs away from the home and returns as a rowdy with the nick name Aadu Thoma.

The movie has some very famous scenes where Aadu Thoma beats up a police officer and finally removes his mundu and chokes him.
