Movies - Spun

Spun is a 2002 black comedy movie directed by Jonas Åkerlund and written by Will De Los Santos and Creighton Vero.

The movie is essentially about crystal methamphetamine addiction and the multitude of consequences that can spring from its abuse. The film’s title is a reference to the slang term for the way users feel when being high on the drug. This is Åkerlund's debute as a film director after being better known for his work on music videos. The film includes appearances from Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame, and Deborah Harry.

The movie is supposed to be a dark comedic parody of Requiem For A Dream.

  • Tagline: The ultimate speed freak's tale.

Synopsis

The film is set in present day Southern California. While trying to make a quick "score", Ross (Jason Schwartzman) suddenly finds himself the unofficial chauffeur for a methamphetamine cook (Mickey Rourke) and his girlfriend (Brittany Murphy). During the film Ross constantly tries to call his former girlfriend, whom he owes $450, but he cannot ever seem to make things work out. He instead gets pulled deeper into the spiral that surrounds Leguizamo, Murphy, Suvari, and Rourke, his “tweaker" friends.

Overview

The director attempts to mimick the effects of the drug, both visually and aurally by using surreal quick cuts, freezeframes, speed alterations, and other special effects including animation. Camera angles remain otherwise steady while the film follows the characters through the three-day journey. The timeline remains for the most part chronological with some references to the past using “trippy” flashbacks.

A small cameo by Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins and more recently Zwan, selected the music for the movie's soundtrack, including the epic "Always." Due to the director's roots in the Swedish black metal scene, there are references to black and death metal in the film's soundtrack as well including scenes from Satyricon's "Mother North" video.

It should be noted that throughout the entire movie, whenever a television is on it is playing Juggalo Championshit Wrestling, a wrestling company operated by Psychopathic Records and the Insane Clown Possee respectively.
