Movies - Street Of Crocodiles

Street of Crocodiles is a 21 minute long stop-motion animation short subject directed and produced by the Brothers Quay and released in 1986.

The Streets of Crocodiles was originally a book written by Bruno Schulz. Rather than literally representing the memoirs of Shulz in his childhood wonderment, the animators instead use the mood and psychological undertones conveyed in the original writing as a springboard for their own creation. The desolation of the environment, combined with the haunting score, conveys a sense of isolation and futility, forcing the viewer into immediate identification with the mute protagonist as he explores a realm of mechanical realities and manufactured pleasures. As the protagonist tries to conform, or is forced into a submissive assimilation, the animation slowly reveals how unfulfilling and dead the surroundings actually are. Life and vitality are stripped gradually away to show the passionless cycle of existence.

Although heavily loaded with metaphoric intent, the piece also shows the experiemental and even curious nature of the Quays' work. Many shots seem more a study in movement and the intrinsic capabilities of the material employed than a layered examination of the possible symbolic intent of such objects as screws, string, dust, and wind-up monkeys. The Brothers Quay manage to imbue every such shot, however, with a stylistic resonance necessary to the overall impact of the work.
