Synopsis

Con-artist Latigo Smith (Gardner) is on board a train travelling across frontier-era Colorado, and is about to be trapped into marriage with a rich and powerful woman (Windsor). He manages to slip off the train at a jerkwater stop, and finds himself in a small town wherein two rival companies of miners, led by Taylor Barton (Morgan) and Colonal Ames (Dehner), are in a frantic round-the-clock race to find "the motherload" of gold buried somewhere under the town. After succumbing to a specific and long-standing gambling compulsion and losing all his money, Smith sets up a scam using a local ne'er-do-well (Elam) to impersonate an infamous gunslinger named "Swiftie" Morgan. He also attracts the attention of Patience "The Sidewinder" Barton (Pleshette), the hot-tempered daughter of Morgan's character, who dreams about escaping the town to become a woman of refinement in New York City. Smith's scheme is complicated when the real Swiftie (Connors) is summoned to town by a telegram informing him of the imposter. A climactic gunfight ends with Swiftie shooting himself when surprised by one of the massive mining blasts that regularly rock the town, and Smith accidently finding the motherload for the Bartons by setting off a load of dynamite he had attempted to use as a bluff against Morgan. Smith's gambling compulsion then finally pays off, making him almost as rich. He and The Sidewinder get married, she gets to send her numerous daughters to school in New York, and Elam goes on to "star in spaghetti westerns."
