Movies - The Amazing Colossal Man

The Amazing Colossal Man is a 1957 black-and-white science fiction film, starring Glenn Langan and produced and distributed by American International Pictures (AIP). It is followed by the sequel War of the Colossal Beast (1958).

Synopsis

Langan plays a soldier in the U.S. Army who, following an inadvertent exposure to plutonium radiation, abnormally grows into a 50-foot-tall giant. At this size, his heart is unable to supply sufficient blood to his brain and he gradually goes insane. He escapes from confinement, "kidnaps" his girlfriend (played by Carol Forrest), and wreaks havoc in Las Vegas.

Production notes

The film was produced and directed by Bert I. Gordon, who also co-wrote it with Mark Hanna (who also wrote the film Attack of the 50 Foot Woman
(1958)). It was distributed at the top of a program double-bill with The Cat Girl. A sequel, War of the Colossal Beast, appeared in 1958.

Trivia

Both The Amazing Colossal Man and War of the Colossal Beast were later mocked on the television series Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The Amazing Colossal Man was homaged in the Warren Ellis comic-book Planetary.
