The Big Sleep (1978) was the second movie version of Raymond Chandler's 1939 novel of the same name. It was directed by Michael Winner and starred Robert Mitchum as the detective Philip Marlowe. James Stewart appeared as General Sternwood. The action was set in London, England rather than California. The movie contained things that could only be hinted at in the 1946 version such as homosexuality, pornography and nudity.

The plot concerns General Sternwood hiring hard-boiled private detective Marlowe as he is being blackmailed by a gay pornographer named Arthur Geiger. The trail seems to lead to Charlotte and Carmilla Sternwood (played by Sarah Miles and Candy Clark respectively), the General's daughters. Richard Boone appears as a fearsome hitman.
