| The Black Stallion is a 1979 film adapted by Melissa Mathison, Jeanne Rosenberg and William D. Wittliff from the 1941 classic children's novel by Walter Farley. It was directed by Carroll Ballard. The movie stars Kelly Reno, Mickey Rooney, Teri Garr, and Hoyt Axton. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Mickey Rooney) and Best Film Editing. In addition to the beautiful scenery on the island and a majestic horse (played by Cass-Olé), the film featured music by Carmine Coppola, the father of Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola who was the executive producer of this film. Reno, the child actor, had been riding horses since he was an infant, and was thus able to perform believably with the horse. The movie was followed in 1983 by a sequel, The Black Stallion Returns, which also starred Reno. There was also a television series called "Adventures of the Black Stallion" which aired from 1990 to 1993 and starred Richard Ian Cox and Mickey Rooney. Then there was a 45-minute 2003 prequel called "Young Black Stallion," shot for IMAX theaters. The movie tells the story of a boy who is shipwrecked on a desert island with a wild Arabian stallion. They become close friends, and later, the two are rescued. Back home in the United States, the boy's mother agrees to let the horse live in the garage behind their house. Later, the boy meets a retired jockey and horse trainer, and the boy decides he wants to enter his horse in races. The stallion is so magnificent and powerful that it is able to compete against the two finest racehorses in the nation. A climactic race ensues, and the boy and his stallion win the race. During the end credits of the film, scenes are shown of the horse and the boy, playing on the island together as the theme music plays.
