Movies - The Blue Spirit

The Blue Spirit is the 13th episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender's first season.

After Sokka and Katara get sick while they are journeying to the North Pole, Aang seeks out a cure and discovers that all they need to do is suck on some frozen toads. Meanwhile, Commander Zhao has been promoted to Admiral and is able to order the Fire Nation’s best men to help him capture the Avatar. Aang is captured and imprisoned while trying to collect the frozen toads. With all hope seemingly lost for Aang, his friends, and the world, there may be a glimmer of hope when a strange masked figure appears, but who could it possibly be?

Episode synopsis

Commander Zhao's quest for the Avatar takes a new turn when he is promoted to Admiral, being able to order the famous Yu Yan Archers to assist him. In an abandoned Earth Kingdom town, Katara and Sokka fall ill, so Aang runs to an herbalist's hut to find a cure. He learns that his friends must suck on frozen frogs from the swamp, but while he is on his way, he is captured by the Yuuyan Archers and is placed in an impenetrable fortress. Zhao informs him that he will not kill him, because then the Avatar will be reborn and the Fire Nation will have to start looking for him/her all over again. He will keep him "alive...but barely".

While Katara and Sokka are waiting, a person wearing a blue mask and wielding twin swords sneaks into the fortress. The masked person deftly defeats the guards, reaches the room where Aang is being imprisoned, and frees him from his shackles. The "Blue Spirit" and Aang fight their way to the final gate of the fortress, where Zhao orders that the Avatar be "captured alive", so the masked person puts his swords to Aang's throat. Zhao then orders the guards to open the gates, and while the two people are backing away, has an Yu Yan Archer shoot and knock out the masked person. Aang is shocked to learn that his savior is his rival, Prince Zuko, but, with some hesitation, decides to help him into safety.

This reminds Aang of a friend of his, who is from the Fire Nation, and asks Zuko if maybe they could have been friends. Zuko answers with a fire blast. Aang returns to Katara and Sokka with the frozen frogs, while Zuko returns to his ship, but both are deep in thought and unhappy as the episode ends, again showing how similar they are, and how their differences seem unimportant.
