The Butcher Boy (1992) is a book by Irish writer Patrick McCabe. It is considered to be the most remarkable book by the author. The book was shortlisted for the 1992 Booker Prize and won the 1992 Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Fiction.

It tells the odd story of Francie Brady, a schoolboy who works at a slaughterhouse, as he slowly approaches the brutal violence.

Film Adaptation

The book was turned into a film directed by Neil Jordan in 1997. It starred Stephen Rea and Fiona Shaw. The film has yet to be released on DVD, much to the chagrin of its fans.

The film won Won the Silver Berlin Bear award for Best Director - Neil Jordan at the Berlin Film Festival in 1998 and a Special Mention for Eamonn Owens' "astonishing lead". It also won the European Film Award for Best Cinematographer for Adrian Biddle.
