Movies - The Cutting Edge

The Cutting Edge is a 1992
romantic comedy film directed by Paul Michael Glaser. The plot is about a spoiled figure skater (played by Moira Kelly
) who is paired with a has-been ice hockey player (played by D.B. Sweeney
) for Olympic figure skating. They faced off against a Soviet pair in the climax of the film, which was set at the actual site of the 16th Winter Olympic Games, in Albertville, France. The original music score is composed by Patrick Williams.

Plot summary

Kate Moseley is a world-class figure skater training for the Olympics: she has genuine talent, but years of being spoiled by her wealthy family have made her all but impossible to work with. Doug Dorsey is a hockey player with drive, skill, and a full complement of arrogance; his team is also on the fast track to the Olympics. Unfortunately, an eye injury suffered during a game effects Doug's peripheral vision enough to force him to retire from the game. At the same time, Kate's colossal ego scares off yet another skating partner, and her coach, Anton Pamchenko, needs to find a replacement as soon as possible. Desperate to stay in Olympic competition, Doug agrees to try working as Kate's partner, even though he has a hockey player's macho contempt for figure skating. Needless to say, the first few practices between Doug and Kate did not go well, but in time they learn to work together and become a pair to be reckoned with both on and off the ice.

Main cast

Sequel

A follow-up film, The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold (working title: The Cutting Edge 2) was produced for the ABC Family cable channel in 2005 and was released on DVD in February 2006. In this sequel, Christy Carlson Romano
plays Jackie Dorsey, the daughter of Doug and Kate from the original film, who also enters the figure skating field only to lock horns with her pairs skating partner, Alex Harrison (Ross Thomas), who until recently was a surfer. Neither Moira Kelly nor D.B. Sweeney appear in this film; Doug Dorsey is played by Scott Thompson Baker, while Kate is played by Stepfanie Kramer of Hunter fame, despite Kramer being 12 years older than Kelly. According to an interview with Kramer (included on the 2006 DVD reissue of the original Cutting Edge), the film takes place more than 20 years after the events of the original (even though it was filmed only 13-14 years later). The Olympics featured in this sequel are in Torino, Italy, which place this film in 2006. Jackie is portrayed by a 21-year-old actress, however assuming the character was born a year or so after the end of the first film (which conclude at the 1992 Olympic games) she should by rights be only 12 or 13 years old.
