The Dream Machine is a 1990 independent thriller, starring Corey Haim
, Brittney Lewis and Randall England. The screenplay was written by Eric Hendershot and based on the old urban legend of a wife selling off a Porsche for a suspiciously low price to get revenge on a cheating husband.

The film was Corey Haim
's first direct to video feature. After numerous rumors began in the late 1980s that he had a serious drug addiction, he made numerous direct to video films in the 1990s, The Dream Machine as well as Fast Getaway
, being one of the most well known and popular.

The film was released onto home video in 1990 and distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Video) and the International Creative Exchange.

Cast

  • Corey Haim
    as 'Barry Davis'. Haim was a teenage idol in the late 1980s, and released a number of popular and successful films targeted at teenage audiences. In the late 1980s he was the centre of a lot of drug abuse controversy but none the less was a very popular figure in teenage culture.
  • Brittney Lewis as 'Robin'. The Dream Machine was her acting debut.
  • Randall England as 'Lance'. England had only had limited acting experience prior to The Dream Machine, appearing with small roles in General Hospital, This Is the Life and Looker

  • Evan Richards as 'Brent Meese '. Richards had previously appeared with small roles in films such as Twilight Zone: The Movie
    and Altered States
    . Evans had larger roles in Down and Out in Beverly Hills as well as Rock 'n' Roll High School Forever

Conception

The films plot is based on an old urban legend which usually sees a male discovering a classified advertisement that is offering a Porsche for a suspiciously low price and finds that the woman who is selling it is almost giving it away to get back at her husband whom has ran off with a younger woman and asked her to sell the car and send him the money.

The film was advertised with the tagline that 'Corey Haim is back behind the wheel!', a reference to the popular 1988 film, License to Drive
which Haim was the star of.

Plot summary

A suspicous Mrs.Chamberlain (Susan Seaforth Hayes
) has hired a private detective to spy on her husband, later that night when she receives the news that her husband is with another woman, she proceeds to go to that location.

Whilst she is on the way, Lance Harper (Randall England), murders the wealthy woman's husband, Jack Chamberlain (Jeremy Slate), who Harper was in various trouble with at the time. The body is stored in the trunk of his Porsche. Upon the arrival of Chamberlain's wife, who came to take back the PorscheHarper disappears into the night, as Mrs.Chamberlain drives away, not knowing her cheating husband has been murdered and is in the trunk of the car she is driving.

Barry Davis, played by Corey Haim
is doing his rounds as a piano tuner, for his parents' business whilst they are on holiday when his dreams of fast cars become a reality when he is given a silver Porsche turbo for free by Mrs.Chamberlain who wants to get even with her cheating husband, whom she had originally purchased it for.

Davis, who cannot believe his luck does not realise that a dead man is in the under the hood of his dream car. Davis, who is evading fraternity boys as well as pursuing his dream girl gets mixed up in a murder case as Lance Harper hoans in on him to get rid of the body, whichhe never intended to stay in the car.
