Movies - The Flight that Fought Back

The Flight that Fought Back is a docudrama produced by the Discovery Channel about United Airlines Flight 93. The programme debuted in the United States on September 11, 2005, marking the fourth anniversary of the event on which it is based.

Plot outline

The Flight that Fought Back reconstructs the events that lead to Flight 93 crashing in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, approx 150 miles north-west of Washington, D.C., during the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Popularity of the show

The show proved to be highly popular when it debuted on the fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It eventually made its way across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom where it was aired on Channel Five on Thursday 5 January, 2006.

Criticisms of the show

Although the show was popular, it received a moderate amount of criticism. Kiefer Sutherland
has come under fire from some members of the U.S. public, believing that ratings were only high because Kiefer narrated the 90-minute docudrama.

More generally, the show was highly criticised because many people felt that it was an attempt to commercialise and profit from what was a truly appalling act against the United States. Another view is that although this programme was compiled from what was available of the black-box recording from the cockpit of United Airlines Flight 93, as well as information from the 9/11 Commission established to investigate the attacks, it fails to show the whole picture.

Governmental help

The FBI helped with the production by handing over some of the black-box recordings upon request. They did, however, refuse to present the complete recording of flight 93, citing national security concerns.
