Movies - The Ghost Goes West

The Ghost Goes West is a British romantic comedy / fantasy film from 1935.

This rather cosmopolitan production combines an Hungarian-born British Producer, a French director, and an American writer in a British film.

Plot outline

The daughter of an American businessman persuades him to purchase a castle in Scotland, dis-assemble it to move it to Florida in pieces. Along with the castle goes the castle’s ghost.

The ghost of Murdoch Glourie haunts the castle after dying a coward’s death in the 18th century. To rest he must find a member of the enemy Clan MacClaggan and have him admit that one Glourie is worth fifty MacClaggans. The plot resembles Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost (1887).

This film was Rene Clair’s first English-language film. After a further film in England, Clair moved to Hollywood. This film contrasts an old world ghost with American vulgarity.
