Movies - The Harder They Come

The Harder They Come is a 1972
Jamaican movie starring the reggae singer Jimmy Cliff, who plays Ivanhoe Martin, and directed by Perry Henzel. The film played a major part in bringing reggae to America, and the title song was a popular single.

It was released in January 1973 in New York City by Roger Corman's New World Pictures to little attention. Yet it became more popular when it was played to midnight audiences nationwide the following April.

Ivanhoe Martin's character in the film is based upon that of Rhygin, a Jamaican criminal that achieved fame in the 1940s.

This film was referenced in the Clash song "Guns of Brixton". The song (The Harder They Come) was also covered by Rancid.

Synopsis

Ivanhoe Martin is a poor Jamaican man in search of a job before finally getting one as a reggae singer. Afterwards, he turns to a notorious life of crime.
