Official Bio

The Huntsman was born deep within the Disenchanted Forest. His youth was spent in training to be a forester. during one particularly cruel and harsh winter, the people of the Huntsman’s village were starving. Children were grubbing in the snow for roots to eat. The Evil Queen was passing through their village. She stopped her hunting party to water the horses. While there the Evil Queen called the Huntsman forward, recognised something special in him.

The Evil Queen gave him a magic crossbow made of wood and silver. The crossbow fired a bolt that would not fall until it had found the heart of a living creature. It could not miss. The Huntsman recognised that he could kill enough food in one day to keep the whole village alive for the winter.

The Huntsman asked the Evil Queen what he must do in order to win the magic crossbow. She told him to close his eyes and fire wherever he wished. Then it would be his. The Huntsman turned away from the village and fired deep into the thick of the forest. The bolt sped a mile through the trees before killing a child playing in the forest.

The child was the Huntsman’s own son. This hardened the Huntsman. As he pulled the bolt from his son’s heart the Evil Queen told him that he would be her Huntsman. From that day forward, the Huntsman lived in the Disenchanted Forest under the Evil Queen’s employment. Raising and hunting animals, killing those who trespassed with his magic crossbow.

History

The Huntsman was born and raised in a village within the Disenchanted Forest/the Thousand-Mile Forest. The Huntsman was still a Forester when he first saw the Evil Queen, it was a cruel winter when food was scarce for the village, (It was a cruel winter and everyone was starving, children grubbing in snow for roots to eat.) The Evil Queen had stopped her hunting party in the village to water their horses, when she spotted the young Forester from her coach, recognized that there was something special about him, and called him forward. Once she had his attention she showed him a crossbow, it was made of wood and silver with and a leather strap, the front shaped like an Hawk/Eagle and gemstones for the eyes; and she revealed to him that it was a magical crossbow; (When this crossbow is fired, the bolt will not stop until it has struck the heart of a living thing. It cannot miss.)

The young Forester was intreiged, and thinking that he could use it to feed the whole village for the winter, asked the Queen: "What must I do to win this magic crossbow?" The Queen told him: "Just close your eyes and fire it where ever you wish, and it will be yours." The young Forester complied: he closed his eyes, picked a direction, and pulled the trigger. The crossbow-bolt spead off for a mile into the trees and struck the heart of a boy who was playing in the forest, when the young Forester pulled the bolt out of the dead boy he recognized as his own son the Evil Queen declared "You will be my Huntsman." From that day onward the Forester, now the Huntsman was changed forever, the loss of his son brought out an intelligent, ruthless hunter, tracker and killer in him, he shows no remorse, and he was now in the Evil Queen's services, the Huntsman operates manly within the Disenchanted Forest, until he was ever summoned by his lady, the Evil Queen.

As he dwells within the Disenchanted Forest: the Huntsman rears game animals, like pheasants, in the forest, (as he is dedicated to the 'sport' of the hunt,) feeds them, cares for them in the winter when there is little food; the Huntsman, armed with his enchanted crossbow, patrols and controls of the Disenchanted Forest - and thinks of himself as "owner" of the Disenchanted Forest. The Huntsman is as likely to fire his enchanted crossbow on a lost traveller as he to fire on any game, or gypsies, or anyone else (unless instructed otherwise by the Evil Queen.) Within areas of the forest the Huntsman has put up signs:
  • If you are reading this, you are trespassing.
  • All trespassers will be considered poachers.
  • 'All poachers will be shot, by order of the Huntsman.
The Huntsman signs his signs and letters with a seal of blood, fur and feathers - a mark of knowledge of the Huntsman's Aristotelian logic.
