Movies - The Legend of Boggy Creek

The Legend of Boggy Creek is a 1973 docudrama dealing with an alleged creature known as, among other designations, "The Fouke Monster", a Bigfoot - like creature seen in and around Fouke, Arkansas since the 1940s. The film mixes interviews with local residents who claim to have had encountered the creature with dramatic/fictitious reenactments of said encounters.

In the film, the creature is reported to be seen mainly by hunters and ranchers. One police officer stated that the creature crossed a road in front of him at 30-35 mph. The creature reported was over 6 feet tall with a slender build, long legs and arms and completely covered in hair, has three toes on its feet, indicated by tracks seen in a creek bank. In one scene, the creature attacks some people in a house, while these people fire on it, it then sends one person to the hospital. In another scene, hunters attempt to chase the creature with dogs, but fail, since the dogs refuse to go after the creature. Some say the creature is dead, others say it is still out there. In the end, the creature escapes all attempts to hunt it.

Charles B. Pierce, an ad salesman, borrowed $160,000 from a local trucking company, used an old movie camera, and hired local people, mainly high school and college students, to make this documentary in 1972. The documentary generated revenue of $20 million. He is from Texarkana, Arkansas/Texas. (This town is located on the state line of Arkansas and Texas.)

The documentary, now on DVD, has a run time of 87 minutes.

Sequels

The Legend of Boggy Creek was directed by Charles B. Pierce. A sequel, Return to Boggy Creek, came out in 1977 but, Pierce was not involved and, it had very little to do with the original movie carrying over none of the docudrama elements. It starred Dawn Wells
, of Gilligan's Island fame, as a mother of three children. The kids get lost in the swamp with two other men and the "monster" comes to their aid.

A third film, incorrectly titled The Barbaric Beast of Boggy Creek, Part II was also made. Charles B. Pierce returned to direct and write this film. Because he was not involved in the sequel he titled the movie "part II." This movie follows the adventures of a University of Arkansas professor and his students on their trip to Fouke, Arkansas to find and study the monster. Subsequently a few scenes in the beginning of the movie were shot at the university, including an Arkansas Razorbacks football game. The movie also was lampooned on an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Movie basis

These movies are based on a creature, similar in description to Bigfoot, reportedly seen in Fouke, Arkansas in the 1940s named after Boggy Creek, which is located near Fouke. Websites and Bigfoot data sites indicate that the creature is still there.
