The Life of Birds is a BBC (in conjunction with BBC Worldwide Americas Inc. and PBS) natural history television series about birds, written and presented by David Attenborough. It comprises ten episodes and was originally transmitted in October 1998.

The series took three years to make, during which time Attenborough visited 42 countries.

Part of Attenborough's 'Life' series of programmes, it was preceded by The Private Life of Plants
(1995), and followed by The Life of Mammals
(2002). Before the latter was transmitted, David Attenborough presented State of the Planet
(2000) and narrated The Blue Planet
(2001).

Each programme is just under 50 minutes long, recorded in 4:3 aspect ratio with stereo sound.

There is an accompanying book, and the series is available as a 3-disc DVD set (BBCDVD1020), with additional footage. It is also included in The Life Collection
box set.

Notable moments

In episode 6, Attenborough tracks down a superb lyrebird and viewers are treated to its unique call. The bird is able to mimic every sound it hears, thus this individual makes noises like a kookaburra, car alarm, camera and chainsaw.
In episode 7, Attenborough is chased by a capercaillie, which doesn't even stop when the presenter falls over.
