The Man From Snowy River films were made in Australia. They include a 1920 silent film version of the poem.

Better known is the 1982 "The Man From Snowy River" film version of the poem, and its 1988 sequel film "The Man From Snowy River II" (which is known as "Return to Snowy River" in the United States), and (as "The Untamed" in the United Kingdom).

The films are based on the poem, The Man From Snowy River
, by Australian poet Banjo Paterson.

The 1982 film

The 1982 film had a cast including Tom Burlinson
as Jim Craig (The Man), Kirk Douglas
as Harrison, the owner of the property, Jack Thompson
as Clancy of the Overflow, and Sigrid Thornton
as Jessica Harrison, the daughter of the owner of the property.

The 1982 film story is about a young man named Jim Craig whose father dies on the Craig family's Cattle station, following which Jim Craig turns up at Harrison's property looking for work, and falls in love with Harrison's daughter Jessica (Sigrid Thornton), much to the disapproval of Jessica's father.

Bruce Rowland composed the music for the 1982 version, a soundtrack that became one of the most critically acclaimed in the history of motion pictures.

NBC Sports uses some of the exact music from the soundtrack for their coverage of The PLAYERS Championship. He also composed the music for the 1988 sequel film.

The 1988 film

In the 1988 sequel, Jim Craig returns to marry Jessica, but finds further problems and opposition from her father.

The sequel film was given the title of "The Man From Snowy River II" in Australia. However, the American and British releases of the film were given different titles. In the United States, the film is known as "Return to Snowy River". In the United Kingdom, the film is known as "The Untamed".
