The Parole Officer from 2001 was directed by John Duigan and was Steve Coogan's first starring role in a major film.

Plot

The main character Simon Garden is a probation officer who considers it more important to "claim generous expenses" than "remember a client's first name". At the start of the film he is facing a tribunal after his entire department submit complaints against him. He is transferred to Manchester.

In Manchester Simon witnesses the murder of an accountant. He inadvertently leaves his wallet containing identification at the crime scene and is duly framed by the murderer and corrupt police officer DI Burton.

Simon discovers that a security tape recorded the whole event but unfortunately it is sealed in a safety deposit box. He enlists the help of some ex-clients and between them they devise a cunning plan to retrieve the tape.

There is also a sub-plot involving Simon pursuing a relationship with a female police officer.
