The Relic (1997), is a film starring Tom Sizemore, Penelope Ann Miller and Linda Hunt. This Peter Hyams directed feature is based on the best selling novel of the same name, The Relic, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

Synopsis

The plot of the film is horror/B-Movie with a monster roaming the dimly lit corridors of Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History (in the novel, the action takes place in New York). Despite garnering multiple genre awards, and getting some appraisal from critics, the movie didn't fare so well financially at the box office. Awards included the Stockholm Film and Fantasy Awards and a nomination for the lead actor Tom Sizemore at Boston. However, "The Relic" has found an audience as a cult hit. With the film’s mixed views from critics and its awards, there has been a sequel in the pipeline for eight years. The sequel is likely to be based on the book's own continuation, a novel titled "Reliquary". The original cast members are not likely to return although Hyams has expressed a wish to come back.
