| The Sheltering Sky is a 1949 novel by Paul Bowles. The story centers on Port and Kit Moresby, a married couple originally from New York who travel to the North African desert accompanied by their friend Tunner. The journey, initially an attempt by Port and Kit to resolve their marital difficulties, is quickly made fraught by the travellers' ignorance of the dangers that surround them. The Sheltering Sky was adapted by Bernardo Bertolucci into a 1990 film starring Debra Winger and John Malkovich. Paul Bowles later expressed the opinion that it would have been better if the film had never been made. The 1980 King Crimson album Discipline includes an eight minute instrumental composition titled The Sheltering Sky. The 1992 album Beyond the Sky by Omar Faruk Tekbilek was inspired by the film version of The Sheltering Sky.
