The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a 2001 novel by Ann Brashares. It tells the story about four best friends and a magical pair of jeans. It was adapted into a film in 2005. Two sequels have been published, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood and Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood.

Plot

In the first novel in the series, it is established that the Sisterhood includes four virtual "sisters": Bridget Vreeland, Carmen Lowell, Lena Kaligaris, and Tibby Rollins. They find a pair of pants that fit all four, even though they are all different sizes. To keep in touch with each other during their summer vacation they pass the pants along. First they go to Lena, then Lena sends the pants to Tibby, and then Tibby sends them to Carmen, and then she sends them to Bridget, and then it goes back the other way so: Bridget, Carmen, Tibby then Lena.When each wears the pants, she gains insight into her life and is emboldened to change it.

Each of the girls' stories is different and fits their characteristics.

Bridget, or Bee, is a bold athletic girl. She sees something she wants, and she gets it. Bee is, however, still grieving from her mother's suicide three or so years earlier. She falls in love with Eric, a counselor at her summer camp.
Carmen - Carma - is a sensitive, caring young woman. She is a writer, and she's the one that keeps the sisters together. In the first book, she visits her father in South Carolina only to learn he has a life without her now.
Lena is quiet and shy. Lenny's the artistic one and the organized sister who keeps everyone else on task. She goes to Greece for the summer, and without really wanting to, falls in love with boy-next-door, Kostos.
Tibby is a rebel. She sets out to make a film about losers, and instead finds her way of thinking turned upside down by a 12-year-old cancer patient, Bailey. Bailey teaches her that everyone has a little "loser" in them.

The American film version was released on June 1, 2005 by Warner Bros. It is directed by Ken Kwapis and written by Delia Ephron.

The film's production budget was $25 million. At the box office, it brought in a total domestic gross of $39 million. It was considered enough of a success to spark talk of producing more of the books in the series. The DVD was released in US on October 11, 2005 and features on-camera commentary by Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, and America Ferrera and deleted scenes (discussed by Kwapis).
