In Harry Potter, the Slug Club is the informal name given to the ever-shifting group of students favored by Professor Slughorn. Slughorn hand-picks the students because they know important people or he believes they have traits, such as ambition, brains, charm, and talent, which will make them become important. Much to Draco Malfoy’s displeasure, Slughorn excludes any students that have known Death Eaters in their family. Throughout the School year Slughorn organizes dinners and parties in which he makes introductions and forges useful contacts between members. Once out of school his favorites usually go on to become outstanding in their various fields. According to Molly Weasley the Ministry of Magic is “littered with Slughorns old favorites”. After leaving Hogwarts, Slughorn’s favorites often stay in touch and send him gifts, give him inside information, or get his opinion on the news or other important decisions. In the book "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", Harry attends the first meeting held on the Hogwarts Express. Harry, who dislikes the meetings, avoids most of the meetings through scheduling conflicts with Albus Dumbledore’s lessons, detention with Severus Snape, or by deliberately arranging Quidditch practice every time he got an invitation. Slughorn, desperate to get Harry to attend the Christmas party, had Hermione Granger check to Harry’s free evenings so he would have to come. The Christmas party was last Slug Club meeting because Slughorn gave up on them or did not want to give Harry a chance to ask him about Horcruxes again.

Earlier Members

These members are assumed based on who Slughorn mentions while going through his pictures. Both Avery and Lestrange (either Rabastan or Rodolphus) were seen in the Pensieve during Slughorn's memory, but because Rodolphus' age has been placed around the 1970s (as the husband of Bellatrix Lestrange), it may be Avery's and Lestrange's parents and not the named current characters.
