Movies - The Tree of Might

is the third Dragonball Z movie. It was originally released in Japan on July 7, 1990 between episodes 54 and 55. FUNimation's title is The Tree of Might. The one hour movie is not considered canonical as it has many inconsistancies with the original series, yet ironically, deals with the introduction of Haiya Dragon (known as Icarus in the edited FUNimation dub and Higher Dragon in the uncut FUNimation dub), Gohan's pet-dragon.

In the movie an evil group of aliens plant the seed of a mysterious tree on earth that begins to grow and suck all water (and life) from the planet slowly killing it. Son Gokū and his friends go off fighting the evil aliens that are lead by a Gokū lookalike named Tullece.

While the movie is not considered canonical, it should be noted that a lot of its video-footage was used in the American intro for the Dragon Ball Z TV-series. Haiya Dragon appears in filler episodes.

Out of Continuity

This movie takes place on Earth during a time in which Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chiaotzu and Piccolo are all alive, and Gokū has trained with Kaiō-sama and learned the Genki-Dama technique. However, this is out of continuity with the television show, as by the time Gokū returned from Kaiō-sama's, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, Piccolo and Chiaotzu were all dead. By the time they were resurrected and back on earth, Gokū had already transformed into a SSJ and Gohan was several years older.

Similarity to the Doom Tree saga of Sailor Moon

The movie is somewhat of a tie-in with the Doom Tree saga of Sailor Moon, (i.e. the concept of an energy-draining tree, destroying the tree, etc.)
