| The Wicked Lady was a 1945 film starring Margaret Lockwood in the title role as a woman marrying into nobility (Barbara Worth aka Lady Barbara Skelton) who turns to highway robbery for enjoyment, and to repay gambling debts. James Mason also starred as her lover, Captain Jerry Jackson and Griffith Jones as her husband, the local magistrate Sir Ralph Skelton. The story was based upon events surrounding the life of Kathleen Ferrers, the wife of the major landowner in Markyate on the main London - Birmingham road. It was loosely remade by Michael Winner in 1983 starring Faye Dunaway and Alan Bates, but failed at the box office. In 2004 it was noted that the original film was the ninth most popular film ever in the UK in terms of audience attendance at UK cinemas.
