Movies - The Woodlanders

The Woodlanders is a novel by Thomas Hardy, published in 1887.

The plot concerns the efforts of honest woodsman, Giles Winterbourne, to win the love of Grace Melbury, whose family has pretensions. When the new doctor, Edred Fitzpiers, takes an interest in Grace, she rejects Giles and marries Dr. Fitzpiers, but leaves him when she learns he has been unfaithful. She turns to Giles, who nobly allows her to sleep in his house during stormy weather, whilst he sleeps outside. As a result, he falls ill and dies. Grace returns to the repentant Fitzpiers, and no one is left to mourn Giles except the faithful Marty South, who has always loved him.

The Woodlanders was made into a film of the same name in 1997, starring Emily Woof
and Rufus Sewell
