Movies - Through a Glass Darkly

Through a Glass Darkly (originally titled Såsom i en spegel) is a 1961 film
written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, and produced by Allan Ekelund. The title alludes to the phrase "Through a glass darkly", used by the Apostle Paul to describe how we currently view the world, the idea being that at the end of time we shall at last be able to see clearly.

Four family members are vacationing on a remote island, shortly after one of them, Karin (Harriet Andersson
), was released from an asylum. One of Bergman's more severe efforts -- and one of his best-known -- the film explores the subtle terror of schizophrenia, both from the perspective of family, and from that of the helpless patient. Karin's brother, an adolescent playwright named Minus (pron. Me-noose) (Lars Passgård), exhibits faint symptoms of the disease as well, and their father David (Gunnar Björnstrand), a writer, appears to take a perverse pleasure in observing the decline of his daughter, who, it is hinted, may provide the material for David's upcoming magnum opus.

This film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
