| To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar is a 1995 Hollywood film, starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo. Other co-stars include Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Arliss Howard, and Jason London. To Wong Foo is commonly believed to be a remake of the 1994 Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, although in fact To Wong Foo was already in production when Priscilla was released. Tagline: Attitude is everything. Plot outlineAfter Vida Boheme (Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Snipes) win a major New York drag contest and a trip to Hollywood, they are persuaded to take the inexperienced 'drag princess' Chi-Chi Rodriguez (Leguizamo) with them. The film's title refers to a totemic autographed photo of Julie Newmar that the trio carries with them on their journey. They buy a beat-up old Cadillac and set off for Los Angeles, but their car breaks down in a small town called Snydersville. With just their wits and an endless supply of garish costumes, they transform the town and everyone who lives there — until homophobic cop Sheriff Dollard (Chris Penn) catches up with them.Critical responseSwazye earned a nomination for the "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical" Golden Globe Award, and Leguizamo garnered a "Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture" Golden Globe nomination. The film is unexpectedly credited for helping revitalize the American career of singer Cyndi Lauper whose previous two albums had fared well internationally but bombed in the U.S.A. Her song "Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun)" was included in the film and became an American hit. On the setThe opening and closing scenes were both filmed in New York City featuring dozens of New York's local drag performers and underground stars in small roles or as featured extras. Included in the mix were RuPaul, Joey Arias, Lady Bunny, Miss Understood, Candis Cayne, Flotilla DeBarge and the late Quentin Crisp. The three stars had previously spent some time in the local drag scene while researching their roles.Robin Williams also has a delightful cameo earlier in the film as the queen's friend John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. Julie Newmar, the obsession of the main characters, also makes a cameo appearance. [ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything!
