Tokyo Drifter (東京流れ者; Tokyo Nagaremono) is a 1966 film directed by Seijun Suzuki starring Tetsuya Watari, Chieko Matsubara and Hideaki Nitani.

Plot summary

After the disbandment of the Kurata syndicate, former Yakuza hit man "Phoenix" Tetsu is sought out by rival gang leader Otsuka. However, Otsuka's attempts to enlist Tetsu fail, and fearing that Tetsu is the primary obstacle in a planned real estate scam, Otsuka decides that he must be eliminated. In order to avoid Otsuka and his men, Tetsu chooses to leave Tokyo and his former boss Kurata behind. Realising this, Otsuka assigns his number one hit man "Viper" to the task of trailing and eliminating Tetsu. After several confrontations with Viper, Tetsu arrives at the establishment Umitani, of one of Kurata's allies. However, Umitani has been convinced to finish off Tetsu by Kurata, who has been influenced by Otsuka. With some help from one of Otsuka's men, Kenji ("Shooting Star", 流れ星; nagareboshi), Tetsu manages to defeat Viper and escape. Tetsu now has no choice but to return to Tokyo and confront his former boss.
