Movies - Tokyo Pop

:For the manga publishing company see TOKYOPOP.

Tokyo Pop is a music-centric movie from 1988 that tells the story of a girl from the USA, a boy from Japan and a briefly successful pop band. The movie contrasts American customs with Tokyo lifestyles, as it presents an evolving love story between the two main characters.

The plot tells the story of a girl named Wendy Reed, who leaves the USA (including her boyfriend, a musician, played by Michael Cerveris
) and travels to Tokyo, Japan. She plans to visit a girlfriend but can't find her. Instead she meets a young man called Hiro (pronounced
hero) who is the leader of an unsuccessful pop band. As Wendy is blonde, and tall by local standards, she attracts attention. Love to the Japanese lead singer and a music career are coming closer and closer as the movie advances. With some tricks they do manage to get the awareness of some record label producers and success will come for a short time. The song that is played back and forth is a cover version from John Sebastian's Do you believe in magic?'' Whilst on the top and some luxury does rush into the lives of the characters, the fresh relationship of the main couple starts breaking apart.

As told in the movie, Tokyo Pop is a one day business where you will only have one hit in the charts and then you will vanish forever. With this consequence, the girl takes its hat for returning to the USA in the hope of making there a much more stable career. She leaves her mate behind in the knowledge of having had an unforgettable time with him and further in the awareness that he is a marvellous composer which will find his way trough his very own power without needing her for an eye catcher. In this she encourages him. The film ends with a tears demanding duet between the two, she in some US studio and singing about her love to him, and he on a Japanese stage replying with similar words, further showing his audience all the very best of his artistic music skills.

The main actors are Carrie Hamilton
for Wendy and Diamond Yukai (aka Yutaka Tadokoro) for Hiro Yamaguchi. Other than that Gina Belafonte and Tetsuro Tamba
were acting. The movie was directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui
. As a side note, X (later on X Japan) were playing the band members in the movie.

At least 95% of the scenes do take place in Tokyo. The soundtrack of that movie got published on CD.
