Movies - Tomie

Tomie is the main character in the Junji Ito
horror comics from Japan.

The Comics

The comics are rather disturbingly illustrated and are not for the queasy or easily frightened. They tell the story of a girl named Tomie who seems to live forever. Men love her so much they go into jealous rages and kill her but each time she returns to haunt them from the dead and her curse lives on. The stories tell different views of the Tomie story from when she lived and died originally to later occurrences where she comes back again. Those who knew her are now old and still wish to possess her so the curse continues. Her hair is a major factor in the stories as well. It kills as well as possesses some such as the story of a young girl who steals the hair of her father's ex-lover (Tomie) and puts it in a box. The hair grows despite it not being attached to anything. The girl wears it and soon has a lovely head of the longest, straightest and darkest hair. But there is a price to pay for everything in these stories. The stories are gruesome but draw the reader in with horrors that hide just around the corner.

The Movies

The story of Tomie continued in the Tomie movie series, comprising of Tomie, Tomie: Replay, Tomie: Rebirth, and Tomie: The Final Chapter, Forbidden Fruit. The first movie was reviewed very badly, and most reviews say that the movies were badly adapted from the comics.
