	Movies - Transformers: The Movie

The Transformers: The Movie is an animated feature film version of the popular television series Transformers released on August 8 1986. It was released in Japan on August 9 1989 (although early promotional materials titled Transformers the Movie: Apocalypse! Matrix Forever ) promised a Summer 1987 release.). It was directed by Nelson Shin who produced the original Transformers television series. The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Orson Welles, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, John Moschitta, Peter Cullen, and Frank Welker.

The film takes place 20 years after the end of the TV series' second season and acts as a "bridge" between the second and third seasons. It is decidedly darker in tone and visual style than the television series; the visuals are more akin to Japanese animé, and Decepticon characters seem less bumbling, killing without hesitation. The film includes several minor skirmishes, and many major characters are killed. The film's tagline was, "Beyond Good. Beyond Evil. Beyond Your Wildest Imagination.".

Plot

It is the year 2005, and Decepticons rule the planet Cybertron. The Autobots send a supply ship to Earth from a hidden base on Cybertron's moon base 1, but Megatron and the other Decepticons intercept it along the way. They hijack the ship after killing Brawn, Prowl, Ratchet, and Ironhide, then sneak past Autobot defenses and assault Autobot City on Earth.

The Decepticons lay siege to Autobot City and nearly destroy it with the help of Devastator. Optimus Prime arrives at the last minute with the Dinobots, who distract Devastator. Then Prime defeats some of the Decepticons almost single-handedly. But he is mortally wounded in a final battle with Megatron, after Hot Rod interferes and is used as a shield by Megatron. On his death bed, Optimus Prime hands over the Autobot Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus and says just before he dies "One day, an Autobot will rise from our ranks, and use the power of the Matrix to light our darkest hour".

On the way to Cybertron the Decepticons throw Megatron and the other fatally injured Decepticons out of the side of Astrotrain. The monster planet Unicron repairs Megatron after his battle with Optimus Prime, and rebuilds him in the form of Galvatron (along with Cyclonus, Scourge and the Sweeps) so that he can hunt down and destroy the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Before seeking to destroy the Autobots, Megatron and his new minions go to the royal coranation of Star Scream as the leader of the Deceptions. Megatron reduces Star Scream to ashes with one shot, but afterwhich Unicron painfully orders Magatron him to focus on his masters goals. The Autobots are alerted when Unicron devours Cybertron's two moons, which double as the Autobots' moonbases, and Jazz, Cliffjumper, Bumblebee, and Spike Witwicky along with them.

Galvatron assaults the beleagured Autobots at the decimated Autobot City, and then the Autobots are split into two parties. The Dinobots, Hot Rod, and Kup end up at Quintessa, the home world of the Quintessons. Arcee, Perceptor, Springer, Ultra Magnus, and Daniel Witwicky crash-land on the planet Junk.

The Dinobots convince the Sharkticons on Quintessa to overthrow their lords, and their party escapes in a Quintesson ship. The Decepticons destroy Ultra Magnus on Junk, then Galvatron takes the Matrix and leaves, planning to use the Matrix against Unicron. The Junkions assault the Autobots until they are interrupted by the arrival of Hot Rod, Kup, et al. Hot Rod befriends the Junkions using the universal greeting taught to him by Kup on Quintessa. The Junkions repair Ultra Magnus, and the two parties of Autobots are reunited.

Galvatron tries to use the Autobot Matrix of Leadership against Unicron, but discovers that he can't activate it. Then Unicron transforms into a planet-sized robot and attacks Cybertron. The Autobot heroes assault Unicron in the Quintesson ship, with the help of the Junkions in their own ship. In the bowels of Unicron, Galvatron and Hot Rod fight over the Matrix, and then Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime and he uses the Matrix to defeat Unicron. Unicron's head is left over from his destruction and orbits Cybertron as a new moon.
