Underworld: Evolution is a 2006 action/horror film, directed by Len Wiseman. It is a sequel to the 2003 film Underworld, and follows on from the plot of the first film, continuing the conflict between vampires and werewolves (Lycans), also highlighting the beginnings of the feud.

Plot

Underworld: Evolution continues where Underworld left off, with the war between the vampires and the Lycans (werewolves). The film traces the beginnings of the ancient feud between the two species as Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the vampire heroine, and Michael (Scott Speedman), the vampire-lycan hybrid, try to unlock the secrets of their bloodlines. The tale of action, intrigue, and forbidden love takes them into the battle to end all wars as the immortals must finally face their retribution. One of the three ancient vampire lords from the first film, Marcus, is awakened. Marcus is the strongest of all vampires, the first vampire, and a son of the immortal Alexander Corvinus. Selene must now enlist the help of her lover, the hybrid Michael Corvin, human descendant of Alexander Corvinus, in order to stop Marcus from releasing his imprisoned twin brother William, who is the first werewolf.

Production

Filming took place in Vancouver, Canada, and is a departure from the setting of Underworld, which was filmed in Budapest, Hungary, and also had a much larger budget than the first film. It was originally set to be released in late 2005, however it was delayed until January 19, 2006.

Response

The film was pre-viewed in a panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, in July of 2005. It was well received as hundreds of fans waited hours to see a clip of the film as well as Kate Beckinsale and the other stars of the movie.

The film opened with a weekend box office (January 19 - 21 2006) intake $27.6M.

As of February 20, 2006, the film grossed a total of 60.3 million dollars in the domestic Box Office.

Classifications

MPAA: R for pervasive strong violence and gore, some sexuality/nudity, and language.

Australia: MA15+ (Strong horror violence, strong scenes)

UK: 18+ No one under the age of 18 can watch at cinemas
