Movies - Up the Academy

Up the Academy (1980) is a bawdy comedy movie about a military school. It was neither a commercial nor a critical success, and is primarily notable for its having been promoted by MAD Magazine, which went so far as to (in the tradition of National Lampoon) lend its name to the movie. MAD mascot Alfred E. Neuman even appeared in a segment before the movie. However, when it proved to be an unfunny failure, MAD's publisher William Gaines paid the production company to remove all references to MAD from future prints. However, due to Up the Academy producers Warner Bros. now owing MAD (under DC Comics ) , the cover of the DVD edition of the film mentions MAD in small type.

Rob Liebman Pulls An Alan Smithee

Adding further to the case of the arguable status of Up The Academy as an abject failure is the fact that actor Ron Liebman ordered his name excised from the credits as well as from all subsequent promotion. Liebman (known then to U.S. television audiences as detective "Kaz") disguises his voice and dons dark sunglasses as an effort to distance himself from the career damage his agreement to portray lead character Major Vaughn Liceman might have otherwise inflicted.

Fortunately, Liebman's career continued and William Gaines kept to publishing satire despite this shared low ebb in 1980.
