Plot summary

The name of this movie could lead one to think a vampire story is in the offing, but Vampire's Kiss is not that kind of movie. It is the story of Peter Loew (Nicolas Cage), a driven yuppie literary agent, who is slowly but inexorably going insane.

Loew puts on a consummate businessman facade by day, and club hops by night, with little in his life of any importance but one night stands and the pursuit of money and prestige.

Loew religiously sees a psychiatrist. During these sessions the watcher is first introduced to his declining mental health through a series of increasingly bizarre tirades that eventually begin to scare even his psychiatrist.

At home, Loew's has allowed his apartment to run to shambles. Throughout the movie the apartment's decline mirrors the protagonist's own. In one scene, probably Vampire's Kiss' most infamous, Loew catches and eats a cockroach in his apartment (Cage actually ate a cockroach during the filming of the scene, which reportedly required three takes).

Early in the film, Loew meets Rachel (Jennifer Beals) at a night club, whom he takes home. It is never made clear whether Rachel is a real person or solely a figment of Loew's deranged mind, but she quickly overpowers Loew, reveals vampiric fangs, and "feeds" on him. Soon thererafter Loew reveals that he believes he is changing into a vampire.

A subplot concerns a secretary working at Loew's office, Alva Restrepo (Maria Conchita Alonso) who is terrorized by Loew. Through plot machinations, Maria comes to falsely believe she has been raped by Loew. The movie spends some time showing a small slice of life of the working poor immigrant through Alva's character.

At Vampire's Kiss' conclusion, Loew is so far gone he is one of New York City's walking crazies; speaking to himself and wandering the streets and using his now disastrous apartment only as vampire's cave to hide from the sun. Loew finally meets an ignominous and fitting end that should be saved for viewing.
