Vana Espuma, as known in English as Idle Mist, is an 1998 independent short film written, directed, and acted in by Colombian film-maker Andres Useche. The film is based on his 1996 award-winning graphic novel of the same name. It was produced and shot for nil budget in the city of Manizales, Colombia over the course of 3 days as a class project, but it quickly garnered attention and accolades when it was entered into a film festival. The short eventually went on to win in several categories at the South American César awards, including Best Leading Actress for Catalina Gallo, Best Screenplay, and Best Fiction Film.

Plot

The movie follows the protagonist Ciro and his girlfriend Valeria (Gallo) admidst a backdrop of violent deaths in the city and mysterious spectral form sightings in the rooftops. As Ciro becomes ever increasingly ridden with haunting and intensifying nightmares, Valerie embarks to help him and seeks the truth behind his "insanity". The movie uses her process of discovery as the vehicle to explore fundamental questions of truth, reality, and perception.
