| Veer-Zaara is a 2004 film directed by Yash Chopra. It is a romance set against the ongoing conflicts between India and Pakistan. The movie stars Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Preity Zinta. Other famous Bollywood stars include Hema Malini and film icon Amitabh Bachchan in a special cameo role. The dialogue was written by Aditya Chopra. The storyZaara Haayat Khan (Preity Zinta) is a Pakistani girl travelling to India. Her bus overturns and she is saved by an Indian pilot, Veer Pratap Singh (Shahrukh Khan). Veer then takes Zaara on a tour of India's Punjab. The two fall in love -- but then it is revealed that Zaara is engaged to another man. Veer confesses his love, then watches sadly as Zaara boards the train that will take her back to Pakistan. Both believe that this is the end of the story.Zaara eventually realizes that she loves Veer and cannot marry her fiancé; Veer realizes that he cannot live without Zaara and travels to Pakistan to find her. Zaara's mother, however, begs him to leave Zaara. Zaara's father is a high-profile politician whose reputation will be ruined if news got out that his daughter is in love with an Indian man. Veer respects this and decides to leave. But Zaara's fiancé, outraged by the shame Zaara has brought upon him, frames Veer and has him wrongly imprisoned for being an Indian spy. Twenty-two years later, Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji), an idealistic Pakistani lawyer, takes up Veer's case. Will she manage to free him? Will Veer and Zaara be re-united? Time will tell ... MusicThe music is based on compositions by the late Madan Mohan, as revised by Madan Mohan's son, Sanjeev Kohli. Lyrics were contributed by Javed Akhtar.Lata Mangeshkar, the famous playback singer, is featured in many of the songs. She used to sing with Madan Mohan, so there is a special poignancy to her contributions. Other singers: Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Gurdas Mann, Roop Kumar Rathod, Ahmed, and Mohhamed Hussain. PopularityVeer-Zaara was heavily promoted pre-release. The film music, released before the actual cinematic release, was a hit, as was the movie.Veer-Zaara won a Filmfare Best Movie Award. It also won Filmfare Awards for Dialogue (Aditya Chopra), Story (Aditya Chopra) and Lyrics (Javed Akhtar). At the IIFA Awards, Rani Mukerji won the IIFA Best Supporting Actress Award, for her work and Shahrukh Khan won the IIFA Best Actor Award. Preity Zinta won the Stardust Star of the Year Award - Female for her performance. 2004 Filmfare AwardsVeer-Zaara received fifteen Filmfare nominations.
